[CC] 00:28:14 He’s no friends of the cta, of the teachers union. The California school boards association likes him a little bit more. I almost wonder if this choice wasn’t a little bit calculated to maybe put a little bit of a wedge between the California school boards association and the teachers association, which right now, they’re very close and very friendly paying for these commercials that are appearing on TV right now. The education coalition has become very strong and very unified right now. You know, while there may be labor disputes at the local level, at a state level there’s one voice coming out for education and it’s very loud and it’s very focused and it’s very anti-schwarzenegger right now. So any way to put a little divide in that I wonder. But he is a San Diego guy. Belva: and, for the record, his name is allen burrson. For the record. Remember that name. But he is a southern California guy, which, again, doesn’t make friends with northern California. Belva: did you say he was a former prosecutor, too, I believe? An attorney, yes. Belva: attorney. He was not friend loo with the cta down in San Diego with the union down there. One wonders if arnold’s numbers would have fallen this much if he had given the schools the prop. 98 Money they were entitled. It seems to have caused him no end of headache. The only problem is, you give the money there--

She really is an asset to the president in so many ways. But this is a case where she delivered the message about education, you know, very sweet way, had a very palatable way to the teachers, and they loved her. I see commercials on TV saying governor schwarzenegger has taken $2 billion away from education. Then I see other commercials that say, no, he’s giveren more to education and-- and this is the crux of the whole argument, schwarzenegger administration says, look, you know, we’re giving the teachers an education, what they want. We couldn’t give them everything that prop 98 demands. But under the California circumstances, the financial circumstances, we gave them everything we could. And the errors by his staff people on the question of pensions and pension benefits created another problem for him. Let me tell you, phil, yesterday on the capitol grounds were about 5,000 pta, parents and teachers together. And let me tell you, they look like real voters. That is not a good sign. I talk with his people and they say this is part of the arnold drama. They don’t go thinking he’s going to be backtracking or even though his initiatives seem to be falling with the voters, they’re saying we’re going right ahead. This morning, pick up “the chronicle” and you have arnold endorse ing the minutemen down at the border. So much for that I didn’t mean to close the border. What is the guy doing? Is he turning into jesse ventura. I think he’s turning into pete wilson. With 187, he had the same attitude. He was not trying to get a second term, he was in his last term. It’s a mistake to have this many problems and this kind of plunge as you’re about to announce you’re seeking reelection. We have to see if he does announce he’s seeking reelection. One person who won’t be seeking his seat is attorney general bill lockyer.

[CC] 00:11:25 1 Governor arnold schwarzenegger is on the wrong end of an opinion poll about his performance for the first time since taking office. The poll shows fewer than half of California’s likely voters approve of the way he’s doing his job. In January of last year about 65 percent of likely voters approved of the job the governor was doing. That number has sank to 45 percent. The findings reflect a downward trend started in January when governor schwarzenegger announced plans for a November special election. Action news capitol bureau cheif nannette miranda takes a closer look at what’s causing the governor’s popularity to plummet. [Locator=state capitol/Sacramento nats/tape 26:24/runs 02 this must stop!” cut to shot of pan from balcony/roar nats/runs 01] hundreds of angry parents from southern to northern California protested at the capitol today because they want governor schwarzenegger to fully fund education in this year’s budget, just as he promised. [Tape 2/tc 21:12/runs 05 louise jaffe/Santa Monica parent: “people in California want the governor to focus his attention on making schools great again.” governor schwarzenegger’s all time low in the public policy institute of California poll is largely because voters don’t approve of his handling of education. The teachers’ union spent millions of dollars in recent weeks on television ads attacking the governor and telling Californians he shortchanged schools. And it apparently worked. [Tape 1 51/runs 10 vince sollitto/governor’s spokesman: “when special interest and unions spend millions of dollars, of course his numbers are going to take a hit. But he’s not worried about numbers. He’s worried about reforms for California.” on top of the poll and reports his administration is in disarray just yesterday, the governor’s education secretary resigned. He relented on speeding up his redistricting plan during his town hall meeting in fontana.

[CC] 00:49:44 protestors take to the streets outside governor schwarzenegger s office find out what they’re unhappy about,

[CC] 00:52:23 Valley forecast. Look for much calmer conditions today after yesterday’s wild weather. Several funnel clouds were seen in our viewing area as spring storms blew up in the late afternoon hours. We’ll see mostly sunny skies today with partly cloudy skies returning for the weekend as highs climb into the mid 70s. Rainfall chances of 20% return this Sunday afternoon. And now for a look at valley traffic, here’s julie watts. A bill to ban the redskin mascot at California high schools, passes another hurdle. The state assembly passed the bill proposed by Los Angeles assembly member jackie goldberg. However, all lawmakers from the san joaquin valley voted against it. Five schools around the valley have the redskins mascot. They say it’s actually a source of pride and tradition. But goldberg claims the term is racist. The fight against the governor’s education reforms gets an extra boost. This time, it’s from the California parents and teachers association. They showed up at governor arnold schwarzenegger’ s Sacramento office yesterday, joining recently constant stream of protests. Many say demonstrations like this are working, as the governor’s approval rating slips below 50 percent: meanwhile, the governor’s supporters say drastic changes always come up against opposition. But they say that doesn’t mean his proposals are wrong. Are extra pounds putting a damper on your life?
